American rapper ASAP Rocky was sentenced in Sweden on Wednesday to a suspended prison following an altercation in June in Stockholm.
The rapper, by his real name Rakim Mayers, and two close friends, Bladimir Corniel and David Rispers, “were found guilty of assault and sentenced to a suspended sentence,” the Stockholm court wrote in the ruling.
The 30-year-old rapper, model and music producer was detained on July 3, and placed under arrest because there was a “risk of escape” abroad. Mayers’ detention has sparked dissatisfaction among fans, as well as celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Rod Stewart.
US President Donald Trump has said he guarantees and has asked the Swedish prime minister to release him, a request firmly rejected by the Stockholm government, which has stressed that he is not involved in injustice.
The rapper, known for the song “Praise the Lord”, was in Stockholm to play at the Smash Festival. The detention led to the cancellation of the other scheduled concerts.
